History of Hunebourg Castle

Medieval Origins

Though its exact founding date is unknown, Hunebourg Castle likely existed as early as the 12th century. The first written record dates back to 1288. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of noble families, including the Lichtenbergs and Fleckensteins. By the late 15th century, however, the castle began to be gradually abandoned.

A Renaissance and Nationalist Project

In the 20th century, the ruins of the castle were acquired by Fritz Spieser, an Alsatian autonomist. His vision was to transform it into his residence and a gathering place for the Alsatian people. Under the direction of architect Karl Erich Löbell, extensive renovations began in 1934, resulting in a neo-Romanesque castle. The keep, known as the Tower of Peace, was erected in honor of Alsatian soldiers who fell during World War I.

These works carried a profound symbolic dimension, reflecting Alsatian aspirations for autonomy. However, the project was interrupted by World War II, and Spieser’s ambitions were only partially realized.

Post-War and Transformation

After the war, the castle was confiscated by French authorities and repurposed for various uses, including as a vacation retreat for government officials. More recently, Hunebourg Castle served as a hotel before becoming private property.

Architecture: A Fusion of Styles and Symbols

Hunebourg Castle showcases a hybrid architecture that blends elements of a medieval fortress with neo-Romanesque design. The keep, or Tower of Peace, stands as a remarkable feature of the reconstruction, alongside the guesthouse and the hall building, which were only partially completed.
